Meet the Writers behind Nexus Vet Weekly

Background

Dr. Stuart Johnson was born and raised in the farming community of Caldwell, Kansas. From an early age he had a keen interest in animal health and animal husbandry. That interest lead him to seek out a career in veterinary medicine. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1983.

Following graduation, he worked in mixed animal practices in Greenville, Texas and Corpus Christi, Texas. While in Corpus, he attended the Surgical Forum presented by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. From that, he decided to seek out a residency in surgery. Dr. Johnson began his residency at Texas A&M University in 1986. There he met his mentor, Don Hulse. He and Dr. Hulse collaborated on several orthopedic research projects dealing with cranial cruciate ligament reconstruction and growth deformities. Dr. Johnson finished his residency in 1989 and received a Master Degree in Veterinary Surgery. The following year, he successfully passed the qualifications needed to be admitted to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

From there, he joined a cooperative group of specialty clinics know as the Greater Houston Veterinary Specialist. In 2004, seeing his practice evolving into primarily an orthopedic case load, he opened a standalone, surgery only practice, Animal Surgery Center of Houston. This practice was a “boutique” type of environment with the staff and Dr. Johnson lending a personal touch to the clients and referring veterinarians. Dr. Johnson operated ASC until the summer of 2019 when he decided to retire, leave Houston and move to the coast.

In 2021, on the urging of Dr. Brian Beale, Dr. Johnson joined Nexus Veterinary Specialists in Victoria. He primarily helps with the ever-expanding case load of small animal surgery.
